Overview of different narrators in a story

Here you can find a short description of the various narrators that might be used in a story. There is a major distinction between a third-person point of view and a first-person point view. These categories are subdivided into the following subcategories: In the third-person point of view there are the omniscient narrator, selective narrator and objective narrator. In the first-person point of view there are the protagonist narrator and witness narrator.
To know the various forms of a narrator and how to distinct them might help you to read more attentively and be aware of their effects.

Useful questions for text analysis & text production:

• Who is telling the story?
• What is the mode of presentation? Is it a panoramic mode (telling, summary)? Or is it a scenic mode (showing)?
• Is the narrator a character in the story? In what relation does the narrator stand to other characters in the story?
• Is the narrator limited or omniscient in his or her knowledge? 
• Does the narrator employ a shifting point of view and move from character to character?
• Does the narrator use the stream-of-consciousness technique?
• stream-of-consciousness technique = a flow of thought in a character's mind
• either an interior monologue: first person, present tense
• or a reported thought/ substitutionary narration (erlebte Rede; third person, past tense)
